While creating the animals in my Seven Sacred Sins series, I realized that image transfers could also be used to create powerful portraits of the Asian men I had photographed. The distressed medium, applied to plywood, evokes a woodcut quality that reminds me of Dürer. For me, portraiture must move beyond surface appearance to reveal the soul, where persona becomes the physical manifestation of the unseen self.
