The first time I used a monolith in my artwork was in the painting Arcadia, No. 2 (The Rising), 2021, which is borrowed directly from Stanley Kubrick’s A Space Odyssey: 2001, symbolizing the rise of consciousness or intellect. This time, the feeling was more solemn, as recently, there has been family tragedy, and I am in the process of letting go. For whatever it may mean, the monolith is a strangely comforting symbol: enigmatic and mysterious.
